“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased.”   Luke 2:14

Peace on Earth was not in my thoughts when I took off before dawn from an Air Force Base in South Vietnam on Christmas Day many years ago.  It was just another day at work in a war most of us didn’t understand and all of us were anxious to be over.

Music for me, as it is for many, has always been one of the best parts of the Christmas season.  As we flew low over the rice paddies of the Mekong Delta, I was singing or humming whatever carol came to mind.  I still remember singing the verse of “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day that says “and in despair I bowed me head, there is no Peace on Earth I said.”  All around us were the signs and realities of war, but unlike the hymn verse implied, there was Peace on Earth.  That peace was in my heart that day.  The peace that Jesus Christ brings when you accept Him as your Savior.

So just as my family and friends were celebrating the wonderful Christmas season that morning many miles away, I too, could celebrate as a war went on around me, PEACE ON EARTH, GOOD WILL TOWARD MEN.
